A Combination of Education, Awareness, and Entertainment
Langley – Sunday, April 26, 2026: The City of Langley and the Langley Library brought vibrant energy and community spirit to their second annual Sikh Heritage Month celebration, drawing a lively crowd of over a hundred attendees. The event buzzed with excitement as guests enjoyed the electrifying rhythms of Punjabi folk dance Bhangra, an engaging presentation on Sikh history and culture in Canada, hands-on calligraphy, cultural displays, and delicious refreshments.
The event began with a land acknowledgement, followed by greetings and a short speech on Vaisakhi by the event’s special guest Manjit Kaur Gill. The program continued with a very informative presentation by Ramneek Sikh Sekhon, highlighting the Sikh history in Canada, including the hardships faced in the early days, as well as the community’s achievements and contributions to Canada. A young girl Pargun Kaur Gill Sang a beautiful prayer song. The Punjabi folk dance Bhangra performances by the Shan-E-Punjab Arts Club team were full of energy, excitement, and entertainment. The team instructor Mandeep Singh invited attendees to the stage, where everyone enjoyed learning a few steps of Bhangra. The Punjabi calligraphy workshop by Sarbjit Kaur Randhawa was also a big attraction, with several children learning the basics of Punjabi writing. There was also a display highlighting the rich history, vibrant culture, and meaningful contributions of the Sikh community in Canada. Attendees enjoyed traditional refreshments.
Overall, the celebration was a joyful showcase of heritage, connection, and shared experiences. It was a great opportunity for locals to reflect, learn, and celebrate Sikh heritage and culture, while also gaining a deeper understanding of Sikh values of equality, service, compassion, and resilience that continue to strengthen our communities today. Langley Library programs expert Donna Gomes did a fantastic job as the MC for the program. At the end of the program, the Library Manager Dr. Sarwan Singh Randhawa thanked the attendees, special guest, the speakers and performers, volunteers, the city and library staff, and the media.
