Surrey , B.C. – The City of Surrey has been honored with two prestigious provincial awards by the B.C. Recreation and Parks Association , recognizing outstanding efforts for innovation, leadership and community engagement in recreation and parks .
” These awards are a testament to Surrey’s commitment to building a city where everyone feels like they belong,” said Mayor Brenda Locke . ” We are proud to be a leader through innovation , meaningful equity and community support. I thank the BC Recreation and Parks Association for recognizing us with this honor and for inspiring us to move forward together.”
The Surrey Accessibility Leadership Team ( SALT) received the Community Leadership Award for its significant contributions to creating accessible and inclusive environments in Surrey’s Parks, Recreation and Culture programs and services. SALT ’s mission is to design programs that are accessible to all residents. The team is comprised of City of Surrey employees and community members who have personal experiences with disability and identity. The team works to ensure meaningful access to programs , services and public spaces.
“ The Surrey Accessibility Leadership Team is extremely proud to receive the Community Leadership Award,” said Amit, Co-Chair of SALT . “This honor reflects the dedication and vision of a team working to make Surrey an even more accessible city. Through unique experiences and diversity , SALT will continue to lead meaningful change in the design and delivery of accessible recreation and park services in Surrey.”
Additionally , the Totest Aleng Indigenous Learning House received the Facility Excellence Award , which is given to capital projects under $6 million. The award recognizes outstanding design of facilities that reflect the culture of the community and improve the well-being of the people. Totest Aleng is a unique space dedicated to Indigenous cultural practices , where Indigenous arts and knowledge are promoted through art residencies , workshops , special events and school programs.
“ Totaste Along: Indigenous Learning House’s receipt of the Suwida Outstanding Facility Award is a testament to meaningful, respectful consultation and collaboration,” said Heritage Services Manager Kristin Hardy . “This is a special place that enables a wide range of Indigenous cultural programming, community connections and learning. We are honored to receive this recognition.”
