Opening ceremony set for June 2026
Surrey, B.C. – The City of Surrey is taking the next big step in honoring its rich sporting heritage by approving the bylaws and work plan for the Surrey Sports Hall of Fame (SSHOF). At Monday’s regular meeting, the council approved plans to hold the inaugural induction ceremony at City Hall in June 2026. Applications are now open for individuals interested in serving on the Advisory Board and Nominating Committee so that the selection process is fair and inclusive.
“The Surrey Sports Hall of Fame is a powerful way to honor the stories, struggles, and triumphs of those who have made a lasting impact through sport,” said Mayor Brenda Locke. “It embodies the spirit of Surrey, which is diverse, resilient, and deeply rooted in community pride.” As we prepare for the inauguration ceremony next June, I invite residents to get involved by nominating an athlete or serving on our advisory board or nominating committee.
Nominations for the inaugural class will open in August 2025, and the exhibitions will be unveiled in spring 2026 at the Museum of Surrey.
The temporary location for the SSHOF will be at the Museum of Surrey, while some other activities are likely to take place in designated civic facilities. The long-term plan is for a permanent Sports Hall of Fame gallery to be located at the future City Centre Arena, designed as both a digital and physical experience. The hall will honour the achievements of athletes, coaches, teams, community builders, and leaders who have contributed to Surrey’s sporting heritage.
The community provided significant input into shaping the SSHOF by providing feedback through an online survey earlier this year, with more than 1,100 stakeholders.
