Canada Post Strike Looms: Union Sets Deadline as Negotiations Intensify

As of May 22, 2025, Canada Post is facing a potential strike that could commence on May 23, 2025, involving approximately 55,000 postal workers represented by the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW). The union has issued a strike notice, indicating their intention to begin strike activity unless a resolution is reached before then.

Negotiations between Canada Post and CUPW have been ongoing, with key issues including wage increases, enhancements to group benefits, protections against technological changes, and improvements to paid medical leave and rest periods. Canada Post has expressed concerns about its financial sustainability, reporting over $3 billion in losses since 2018 and debts exceeding $1 billion.

On May 21, 2025, Canada Post presented new offers to CUPW, aiming to address some of the union’s demands. The union is currently reviewing these offers but has indicated that they “fall short” of expectations. Canada Post has declined the union’s request for a two-week extension to consider the offer, emphasizing the urgency of reaching an agreement to avoid service disruptions.

A strike could significantly affect mail and parcel deliveries nationwide, impacting individuals and businesses that rely on Canada Post’s services. During previous strikes, such as the one in late 2024, there were substantial delays in mail delivery, affecting small businesses and e-commerce operations.

Both parties have expressed a willingness to continue negotiations, with Canada Post stating it is ready to resume bargaining “as soon as possible” with a mediator present. The situation remains fluid, and Canadians are advised to stay informed about potential service
