Doug McCallum Is Back: Building Surrey’s Future as a Global City

Former Surrey mayor Doug McCallum has announced his return to municipal politics, unveiling a renewed vision aimed at positioning Surrey as a globally competitive city.

Joined by running mates Mandeep Nagra and Doug Elford, McCallum is campaigning on a platform that emphasizes infrastructure expansion, economic development, and affordability for residents.

McCallum pointed to his previous tenure as mayor, highlighting major initiatives such as the expansion of the SkyTrain into Clayton Heights and the long-anticipated arrival of University of British Columbia in Surrey as key milestones. He also underscored his record on maintaining relatively low property taxes during his time in office.

“Surrey is on the cusp of becoming a global city,” McCallum said. “But there is more work to be done, and that requires experienced leadership and a unified team.”

The campaign’s forward-looking platform includes extending SkyTrain service to Newton, implementing a zero-percent property tax initiative, and launching a “Surrey Centre Opportunity Zone” aimed at attracting investment and fostering economic growth. Public safety also remains a central focus, with commitments to safer streets and stronger community protections.

McCallum and his team argue that these initiatives will not only support population growth but also elevate Surrey’s standing on the international stage. Their campaign frames the upcoming election as a pivotal moment in shaping the city’s long-term identity and economic future.

As the race unfolds, voters will weigh these proposals against competing visions for Surrey’s development—making the election a critical juncture in determining how one of British Columbia’s fastest-growing cities evolves in the years ahead.
