Richmond, BC — In a significant development for public transit in Richmond, the new Capstan SkyTrain Station on the Canada Line has officially opened its doors to the public. This addition aims to provide efficient rapid transit services in the bustling Capstan Village area, which is poised for rapid growth with an expected population of about 16,000 residents.
Located strategically between Aberdeen and Bridgeport stations, Capstan Station offers several state-of-the-art amenities that set it apart from other transit facilities. These include a larger platform waiting area, an expanded street-level concourse, dual sets of escalators, and the first all-digital station setup with enhanced display screens. Additionally, the station plans to host future commercial retail spaces, further integrating convenience with transit.
The development of the station is the result of a collaborative effort between TransLink and the City of Richmond, funded through an innovative model involving significant contributions from Capstan Village developers. This funding strategy marks a first-of-its-kind in Canada, enabling the construction of the $62 million project without direct costs to local taxpayers. Developers contributed $32.2 million towards the project costs, highlighting a sustainable approach to urban development and community amenities.
The station isn’t just a transit hub but also a cultural venue, featuring a distinctive art installation by local artist Howie Tsui. The artwork, a large mosaic depicting aquatic life in the Fraser River estuary, spans over 3,600 square feet and includes more than 3,500 custom-made glazed glass and metallic tiles. This piece is designed to transport commuters into the underwater world of the estuary, adding an element of wonder to the daily commute.
Kevin Quinn, CEO of TransLink, expressed enthusiasm about the new station, stating, “This brand-new station, located in the heart of a bustling community, will enable current and future residents of Capstan Village to make transit their number one transportation choice.” He emphasized the role of fast, frequent, and accessible transit in connecting the region and strengthening cities.
Echoing these sentiments, Malcolm Brodie, Mayor of Richmond, highlighted the innovative funding collaboration as a model for delivering community amenities sustainably. “The Capstan Station is an example of how the City of Richmond, through an innovative first-of-its-kind-in-Canada funding collaboration with developers, can deliver much-needed community amenities without direct costs to local taxpayers,” said Mayor Brodie. He further noted that the station would support the vibrant, growing neighborhood for decades to come.
Capstan Station is only the second additional SkyTrain station to be built on an existing line since Lake City Way Station opened in 2003 after the Millennium Line was already in service. With over 30,000 customers riding the Richmond–Brighouse section of the Canada Line each weekday, the new Capstan Station is expected to significantly enhance transit accessibility and encourage sustainable transportation choices among the residents of Richmond.
