City – level initiatives will inspire residents to beautify the community through small projects
Surrey , B.C. —To kick off the City of Surrey’s third annual ‘ Beautify Your City ’ campaign , residents of Ted Kuhn Towers, eager to do something different, transformed a blank wall of an assisted living building into a masterpiece of local art with a warm, earthy spray paint . Mayor Brenda Locke will address council on June 4. , joined forces with representatives from Options Community Services and local residents to create a warm and inviting mural that reflects a strong sense of togetherness and unity.
Mayor Brenda Locke said , “ I am thrilled to be participating in this beautiful project as we kick off this year’s ‘ Beautify Our City ’ campaign. This initiative has been instrumental in fostering community pride and inspiring residents’ creativity and desire to make a difference. I am excited to see what other inspiring projects residents will come up with this year. ”
Launched in 2023 , the council-approved campaign has already inspired hundreds of Surrey residents to improve their communities and beautify their neighbourhoods. The initiative provides tools, resources and Neighbourhood Enhancement Grants to help residents and community groups complete small projects. These projects not only improve the appearance of their neighbourhoods , but also foster a unique sense of community by bringing people closer together.
Over the past few years, nearly 200 neighborhood improvement projects have been completed in Surrey, ranging from fence beautification projects and outdoor murals to Mini Sharing Gardens , Neighborhood Exchange Libraries and Community Cleanups . Our city’s Neighborhood Event Kits have also helped support a wide range of small events in neighborhoods, including community building , block parties , community celebrations , festivals and cultural performances .
“ Often a little extra help is needed to get a project off the ground,” said David Sadler, Community Enhancement Planner for the City of Surrey . “ If you have an idea for improving your community, please contact our city team for the help you need to bring it to life this summer : which could include a grant, event kit or neighborhood cleanup kit . ”
“ We are thrilled to receive support from the City of Surrey’s Beautification Campaign , which gave Ted Kahn Towers assisted living residents the opportunity to participate in this beautification activity , which will be a wonderful visual addition to their community , ” said Neil Arao, Executive Director of Homeless, Housing and Mental Health Services at Options Community Services. “This opportunity aligns perfectly with and supports the thoughtfully designed ‘ wraparound wellness programming ’ that Options is committed to making available to residents of this Surrey community. ”
Our City will host a number of events and workshops to support and inspire Surrey residents this spring and summer .
