SURREY, B.C. — Community leaders, Surrey MLAs and residents gathered at Surrey City Hall on last Saturday evening to celebrate the start of Swahili Community Week during the Swahili Gala Night and Award Ceremony, hosted by the Swahili Vision International Association (SVIA).
Running from July 4 to July 9, Swahili Community Week recognizes the rich history, language and cultural contributions of Swahili-speaking communities in British Columbia and around the world. The week also highlights the importance of cultural diversity, community engagement and cross-cultural understanding.
The gala featured cultural performances, community recognition awards and opportunities for attendees to celebrate the achievements and contributions of members of the Swahili-speaking community.
Surrey MLAs Garry Begg, Amna Shah and Jessie Sunner joined members of the Swahili community at a gala celebrating Swahili culture, language and community contributions.
As part of the week-long celebration, SVIA also hosted Swahili Fest on July 5 in New Westminster, bringing together families and community members for cultural performances, music, food and educational activities.
Swahili Community Week serves as an opportunity to celebrate the heritage of Swahili-speaking people while strengthening connections among diverse communities across British Columbia.
