Surrey , B.C. – City Council celebrated the completion of the third water-based synthetic turf field at Tamenavis Park. This makes it the only field hockey complex in Canada with three elite-level fields designed for high-level competition.
Mayor Brenda Lock said , “ We have seen Surrey become one of the country’s premier destinations for field hockey , hosting major tournaments at every level, including Field Hockey Canada’s 2026 Under- 18 National Championships . By investing in facilities like this, we are providing more opportunities for young people to stay active , build confidence and excel in the sport, and it’s all happening in Surrey.”
The water-based turf, required for high-level competitions, features short, dense artificial grass that is sprayed with water at regular intervals to provide a smooth and fast surface for play. The new field cost $4.94 million , funded through the city’s Parks , Recreation and Culture Department’s capital budget , provincial gaming revenues and the Canada Community-Building Fund.
“ Our government is committed to investing in outdoor parks and recreational facilities that promote the health and well-being of Canadians,” said Sukh Dhaliwal, MP for Surrey Newton . “We are proud to celebrate the completion of the Tamenavis Park Field Hockey Pitch, a place for the community to be active , play and enjoy time together.”
Councillor Gordon Heppner, Chair of the Parks , Recreation and Sport Tourism Committee, said : “ The completion of this project is a significant milestone for Surrey’s Sport Tourism Strategy. Investments like this help us attract national and international competition, boost economic activity and establish Surrey as a centre for high-level sport.”
Tamenavis Park, located in Newton, is spread over 19.5 acres. It features a baseball diamond , sports courts , picnic shelters and walking trails that connect to the Serpentine Greenway. Other improvements are also planned for the park , including a new fieldhouse at a cost of $3.26 million , which will include change rooms and washrooms. These improvements will bring the total investment in the park to $8.2 million , which will further enhance the experience for players and park visitors.
Gary Bagg, Parliamentary Secretary for Surrey Infrastructure and MLA for Surrey-Guilford, said : “ Surrey is a world-class destination for sport , and this new venue will bring athletes together at Temenavis Park for hundreds of hours of community engagement and networking. Partnerships like this are a great example of how governments working together can drive positive change.”
