This winter, the George Mackie Library in Delta is launching a series of engaging programs designed to foster the love of reading and creativity among children and families. From specialized sessions for babies and toddlers to craft gatherings and board games, the library offers a diverse schedule that promises to enrich the cold months with learning and fun.
Early Literacy and Creative Programs
Starting mid-September, the library will reintroduce its beloved reading sessions: Babytime, Toddler Time, Storytime, and Creative Bugs Storytime. These gatherings are perfect for introducing children to the wonders of literature through interactive stories, songs, and rhymes, nurturing an early love for books.
For the creative minds, Maker Mondays will commence on January 13 from 3:30 to 4:30 pm. This program encourages children to unleash their creativity and explore various crafts. Additionally, the Lego Club, beginning January 14, offers a playful hour from 3:30 to 4:30 pm every Tuesday for children to build and imagine freely, enhancing their spatial and problem-solving skills.
The Literacy Storywalk, available from January 7 to 31, invites families to enjoy an interactive storytelling experience within the children’s department. Participants can follow a story along a designated path and answer a question at the end to win a prize—a delightful way to engage young readers.
Specialized Parent-Child Programs
For very young learners, the Parent-Child Mother Goose program starts on January 21, catering to children 15 months or younger. Running from 10 to 11 am, this eight-week program focuses on developing speech and language skills through rhythmic storytelling and singing. Participants will enjoy snacks, a graduation certificate, and a song booklet upon completion. This program is exclusive to Delta residents due to funding requirements.
Weekend Activities
The library also offers leisure activities for all ages. The Board Game Café will be held on January 18 and 25 from 1:30 to 3 pm, providing a cozy atmosphere where families can play board games in front of a digital fire log. This event includes music and refreshments, making it a perfect weekend retreat.
Crafting and Bilingualism Workshops
The Knit ‘n Stitch club, now meeting on Sundays from 2 to 4 pm, welcomes individuals of all ages and abilities to share in the joy of knitting, crocheting, quilting, embroidery, and weaving. This program is ideal for those looking to connect across generations and share creative ideas.
Moreover, on January 27 from 1 to 3 pm, the library will host the Raising Bilingual Children Workshop, led by Anne Rimrott, Ph.D. in linguistics. This workshop is tailored for parents and caregivers managing bilingual or multilingual environments at home. Dr. Rimrott, who has personal and professional experience in language acquisition, will provide practical strategies and an action plan to support families in achieving their language goals.
