The two-term mayor committed to “keep the momentum going” and continue to invest in key city initiatives while keeping taxes down and staying debt free
BURNABY, August 21, 2026 – Mike Hurley officially opened his campaign office yesterday evening at a campaign kick-off party attended by over a hundred supporters and community members.
In a speech to supporters, Hurley promised to advance his work on affordable housing, public safety, and community amenities.
“We have made great progress over the past eight years in the areas that matter to Burnaby residents. We’ve stopped demovictions, prioritized new affordable housing and invested in community amenities, all while keeping taxes down and staying debt free,” said Burnaby mayoral candidate Mike Hurley. “Now, we need to keep the momentum going and continue building a Burnaby that works for everyone.”
Seeing long-time Burnaby residents displaced from their homes due to demovictions spurred Hurley to run for mayor the first time back in 2018. After being elected, he put an end to demovictions and introduced the strongest renter protections in North America. Over his time in office, the City of Burnaby has approved 25,000 new homes and established the Burnaby Housing Authority to build affordable rental homes in the city.
Under Hurley’s leadership, the City of Burnaby has invested substantially in renewing public infrastructure and community amenities. This includes acquiring the Christine Sinclair Community Centre and committing to build three new community centres – Burnaby Lake Recreation Centre, Cameron Community Centre and Library, and Brentwood Community Centre – as well as a new modern performance venue at the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts.
A firefighter before entering politics, Hurley takes public safety seriously. He greenlit the construction of an expanded RCMP headquarters that will improve the recruitment and retention of officers; he established Burnaby’s first-ever wildfire early warning system that allows for the rapid detection and reaction to forest fires on Burnaby Mountain; and he approved the Community Safety and Well-Being Plan, which will improve safety in public spaces and allow the City to respond more effectively to climate change-driven events.
Hurley is a firm believer that innovation is key to Burnaby’s long-term prosperity. He struck the Mayor’s Task Force for Economic Growth and Resilience, which brought together leaders in business, education and government to recommend ways to transform Burnaby into a leading hub for business and innovation. He plans to implement the task force’s key recommendation of creating a Burnaby Innovation District to catalyze the city’s development into a leading hub for cutting-edge, high-tech industry. He has also applied this innovation mindset to improving city processes, which has made it possible to reduce red tape and processing times for city permits and licences for residents and small businesses.
The campaign office, located at 4900 Kingsway in Burnaby, will serve as the home base for campaign volunteers and community outreach activities during the campaign period.
About Mike Hurley
Mike Hurley was born in Magherafelt, Northern Ireland and came to Canada in 1983 at the age of 25. In 1988, he moved to Burnaby where he worked with the Burnaby Fire Department for 30 years. Hurley also served as the head of the BC Professional Fire Fighters’ Burn Fund and was instrumental in organizing the multi-million-dollar fundraising effort to build the Burn Fund Centre. In recognition of his substantial contributions to public life and charitable causes, he was awarded the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal in 2002, the Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012 and the Platinum Jubilee Medal in 2022. He is married with four children.
