SURREY, BC – MLA Jagrup Brar, MLA Garry Begg, and MLA Amna Shah joined community members at Bear Creek Park on August 14 to celebrate Pakistan Independence Day, recognizing the many contributions of Pakistani Canadians to Surrey and British Columbia.
Hosted by the Friends of Pakistan Canada Association (FOPCA), the event brought together families, community leaders, and residents for an evening celebrating the 79th anniversary of Pakistan’s independence and the strong cultural ties that enrich British Columbia’s diverse communities.
The evening began with a beautiful recitation of the Holy Quran by Saad Salis, followed by a Nasheed performed by Abdul Rasool Salis. Attendees then stood for the national anthems of Pakistan and Canada, reflecting the shared values and enduring friendship between the two countries.
A highlight of the celebration was the series of performances by talented local children under the direction of Sarmah Latif. Their presentations showcased the richness of Pakistani culture and heritage while highlighting the energy and creativity of Surrey’s young people.
Pakistan Independence Day provides an opportunity to celebrate the history, traditions, and achievements of the Pakistani Canadian community. The event also recognized the important role Pakistani Canadians play in strengthening Surrey and communities throughout British Columbia through their contributions to business, education, public service, and community life.
The gathering reflected Surrey’s commitment to diversity, inclusion, and multiculturalism, bringing together people of different backgrounds to celebrate cultural heritage and community connection.
