Local storyteller and communications professional Phalak Betab has officially launched Humans of Langley & Surrey, a community-driven booklet that captures the voices, experiences, and recommendations of people who shape life in the region.
The booklet features a diverse group of residents from Langley and Surrey, each sharing personal insights and their favourite local spots—from cafés and restaurants to hidden gems across the cities. Designed in a modern, Instagram-style format, the project blends storytelling with practical, community-based recommendations, making it both engaging and useful for readers looking to explore their own neighbourhoods more deeply.
In addition to the print edition, Humans of Langley & Surrey is now available globally on Amazon and Kindle, making these local stories accessible to a wider audience and allowing readers beyond the region to experience the unique voices of the community.
“This project is about celebrating real people and creating a sense of belonging,” says Betab. “Every person has a story, and through this booklet, we’re building stronger connections within our community.”
The launch event brought together community members, featured participants, and local leaders, highlighting the power of storytelling in fostering inclusion, representation, and local pride. Attendees had the opportunity to meet contributors, hear behind-the-scenes stories, and engage in meaningful conversations about identity, culture, and shared experiences in an evolving urban landscape.
Humans of Langley & Surrey is part of the broader Stranger Story initiative, which aims to amplify authentic voices through books, podcasts, and community projects. With plans to expand into more cities and formats, the initiative continues to build a platform where everyday stories are valued, documented, and shared.
As the project gains momentum, Betab hopes it will inspire others to look closer at the people around them, appreciate diverse perspectives, and contribute to a stronger, more connected community—one story at a time.
