Surrey North MLA Mandeep Dhaliwal recently welcomed Moti Johal to his constituency office to personally thank him for a split-second decision that changed a family’s life forever. The visit was an opportunity to acknowledge Johal’s calm judgment and instinctive response during a life-threatening situation.
Just days earlier, a young deaf autistic child ran into oncoming traffic at a busy Surrey intersection. With only seconds to react, Johal rushed into the roadway and brought the child to safety, preventing what could have been a devastating tragedy. His actions quickly drew widespread attention and appreciation from people across Surrey and beyond.
MLA Dhaliwal said it was important to publicly acknowledge individuals whose actions make a meaningful difference in the lives of others.
“One of the greatest privileges of serving as an MLA is meeting people whose actions make a real difference in our communities,” said MLA Mandeep Dhaliwal. “Moti’s decision to step forward in a moment of crisis reflects the compassion and responsibility that bring out the very best in our province. I was honoured to thank him personally and acknowledge what he did for that young child and family.”
Reflecting on the recognition, Johal said he never expected to be in the spotlight and remains grateful for the support he has received.
“I want to thank MLA Mandeep Dhaliwal for recognizing and praising me for my actions,” said Johal. “I think it was just an instinct that kicked in to help the little boy and make sure that he was safe. I also want to thank the community for all the positive feedback, support, and love. The biggest thing is that the little boy is safe.”
Beyond the events of that morning, the story has become a reminder of the impact one person can have in a matter of seconds. Whether it is helping a neighbour, volunteering in the community, or responding when someone is in need, these everyday choices help build communities where people know they can rely on one another.
