A recent poll indicates that a growing number of British Columbians are choosing not to report criminal activity, citing a lack of faith in the justice system. However, even if you share those concerns, it remains crucial to report crime—and with Crime Stoppers, you can do so anonymously by contacting them.
The poll, conducted by Research Co. in September for the Save Our Streets coalition, found that residents across the province feel unsafe and believe that the courts, governments, and law enforcement aren’t doing enough to address crime. At a news conference following the poll’s release, Linda Annis, Executive Director of Metro Vancouver Crime Stoppers, emphasized the importance of continuing to “report, report, report.”
“I have to say two really troubling numbers jumped out at me from this poll. Eight-eight per cent of British Columbians say crimes are going unreported, and 68% say it’s because they’ve lost confidence in the justice system,” Annis said. “But when you report a crime, it also provides police with the kind of data and information they need to determine where valuable resources should be deployed to be most eƯective in solving crime. The fact that so many of us think ‘why bother’ is incredibly troubling and something we need to turn around. The simple fact is, our police do a terrific job but they cannot be everywhere. We, as British Columbians, can help out in a large, large way”.
