The end of the year means lots of time spent socializing at parties and workplace gatherings, meeting friends at bars and restaurants, shopping, and going to shows and other special events.

But as the days get shorter and darker, it’s also time to take an extra minute to think about staying safe, being aware of our surroundings, and ANONYMOUSLY reporting any information you have about a crime to Crime Stoppers. Executive Director Linda Annis notes the message is especially important as 2024 ends, with concerns about our personal safety on the streets at an all-time high.

“When out and about, don’t walk around at night on your own,” Annis says. “There’s safety in numbers. Also keep your phone, handbag or wallet close at hand in crowded stores to deter purse snatchers and pickpockets, and never display large sums of money in public. And always bring in packages delivered to your door as soon as you can.

“This time of the year is no time to let our guard down when it comes to porch pirates, home break-ins, parking lot B&Es and online fraudsters,” says Annis. “If you see a crime in action, call 9-1-1 or the local police right away. But if you have information about any crime that could lead to an arrest, but want to remain anonymous, call us at Crime Stoppers. Please don’t hesitate to call us, and our call handlers will help you safely provide the information to us. Your anonymity is guaranteed by the Supreme Court of Canada. You’ll never be questioned or called to testify.”

Anonymous tips may be provided though Crime Stoppers’ downloadable “P3” phone app, calling Crime Stoppers or 1-800-222-8477, online at solvecrime.ca, or by following the link on the Metro Vancouver Crime Stoppers Facebook page.
